Peak Scholar

Jason Johnson has been named a 2017 Peak Scholar at the University of Calgary for Constructing Digital Futures. Constructing Digital Futures is an SSHRC funded initiative that brings together design researchers from all over North America to collaborate on projects that develop and promote digital tools for design literacy.  This project has been a platform for engaging communities in the production of design artifacts through digital tools and has resulted in a number of public art projects across Alberta.

Jason Johnson Appointed as Associate Dean Academic Architecture at University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS) (LINK)

Jason Johnson has been appointed to lead the Master of Architecture program at EVDS.  He follows Graham Livesey as the Associate Dean Academic Architecture.  Johnson is an associate professor of architecture at EVDS and a co-director of the Laboratory for Integrative Design.

His design research and teaching is focused on the integration of computational techniques through design and making.

“I look forward to building on the work that the program has undertaken over the last decade to create a distinctive voice and culture within the context of Canadian schools of architecture.  We will continue to build on our strengths in the areas of contemporary design techniques and practices as we educate the architects and designers of the future.”

Jason Johnson is presenting work completed in collaboration with Matthew Parker entitled “Architectural Heat Maps: A Workflow for Synthesizing Data” at ACADIA. The presentation is focused on their work in synthesizing computer vision and generative algorithms in architecture to produce new formal languages.

Jason Johnson will join Marc Fornes, Alvin Huang and Simon Kim in Bangalore, India next month for Mosaic of Episodes, ACT 1.

Jason Johnson, Guy Gardner and Matt Parker have been shortlisted for 2 public art projects for C-Space .

Jason Johnson in collaboration with the Laboratory for Integrative Design has been selected by the City of Calgary for the design of urban furniture and bicycle racks. Watch this space for more news on these projects.

Santiago, Chile (July 2016)

MAS at ACSA International Conference

The FXAT Screen and ongoing research into computer vision and digital generative machines were presented at this year’s ACSA International Conference which took place in Santiago, Chile. Jason and 3 students from the University of Calgary presented research and projects completed over the last year as part of a number of collaborations with the Laboratory for Integrative Design, Synthetiques and Ibanez Kim.

Minus Architecture Studio with Guy Gardner has won the competition to produce a work of public art for the Emerald Hills Sports Pavilion.
